Commemorations for the 100th Anniversary of The Somme

Written by Juliana Austen on September 15th, 2016.      0 comments

Those who fell 100 years ago were honoured and remembered in Auckland on the 15th September 2016.
A field of 163 crosses bears the names of Aucklanders who died in the battle on the 15th September 1916.
A commemoration ceremony was held in the Hall of Memories, Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Especially moving was a letter written by Private William Price read by one of his family members. In the letter, to his mother and fiancee, he thanked them for shortbread which he had shared with his mates. He was killed the next day. Together, his family and that of his fiancee laid a wreath in his memory.
