Messines has never forgotten them

In Belgium a special project is remembering New Zealanders who fell in battle 7 June 1917. The Peace Village’s “Post to the Past” is a remembrance project for the Battle of Messines:

A trail of remembrance

"Out of all the nationalities that fought at Messines during the Great War, the Kiwis travelled furthest. The saddening consequence is also that they were least likely to receive a family visit. But Messines has never forgotten them.

With “Post to the Past ”, we want to keep alive the memory of all those who fell in the Battle of Messines.

Some 800 posts with personal messages to a Kiwi soldier were planted early June along the Peace Path in Messines. This trail links up various World War One memorials and sites. The coming two weeks it will become a trail of remembrance. This way, family members and other pilgrims can read the messages from today’s youngsters and possibly even write a message back to one of the pupils.

On 7 June 2017, day on day one hundred years later, the Governor General & the New Zealand Commander Joint Forces will open the trail of remembrance and write the final post. Other senior dignitaries are likely to follow their example later in the day. “
